Overview

A species with one of the nicest songs. They usually migrate in winters but lately they have been over wintering in the UK. The Blackcap is attracted to Mistletoe berries in the winter.

Description

The Blackcap is quite a chunky bird the male having a black cap and a greyish under body with a brownish grey back, grey wings and a grey tail while the female has a brown cap and a brownish body.

Distribution

Throughout the UK, although they are primarily a summer visitor

Habitat

Woodlands, parks and large gardens

Breeding

The male bird constructs several nests in undergrowth or brambles and the female selects one and finishes it off.  Incubation period is approximately 11 -12 days and the young remain in the nest for 10 – 14 days.

Food

Eats a variety of insects, berries and fruit. They will readily take sunflower hearts, peanut granules, peanuts and suet blocks from bird feeder stations especially in the winter.

Population Trends

The UK breeding population is currently stable.
