Goldfinches are usually seen in groups as they flitter from garden to garden in their search for food. Once they have found food they are very protective of that area. They sometimes get into fights amongst themselves when in the breeding season.
The largest member of the tit family, the Great Tit is easily recognised by its black and white head. They are woodland birds who have successfully adapted to garden life.
The woodpecker is now becoming increasingly visible in the gardens of houses with large trees to which they can create their nesting sites and the easy accessibility to free food being put out by people. The male bird is renowned for the noise he makes when making holes in either trees or dead wood.

The largest of the three wood peckers that breed in the UK, they have an undulating distinctive flight and a gregarious laugh. They tend to peck at soft wood or even peck at the ground for insects. Their tongue can be extended to extract insects from the ground or in the trees. They do climb up tree trunks and if spotted they will move position to avoid being seen.
