Fat balls for birds are one of the most traditional ways of feeding high-energy suet to wild birds. They are still an extremely popular choice in most gardens, and are a valuable source of energy for a wide range of bird species, with the tit family enjoying them especially.
We have removed the potentially harmful plastic netting usually found on fat balls, with this eliminating the possibility of birds getting entangled in the netting. Feed these un-netted fat balls on a bird table or in a fat ball feeder.
Fat balls for birds and especially the tit family
Although fat balls for birds attract many species, the tit family especially like them and species include Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long Tailed Tit and Coal Tit. Long Tailed Tits form a great spectacle as they feed, and it's amazing to see just how many will cram onto a single ball! The more solitary Great Tit makes a captivating striking sight as it chisels away furiously at a fat ball.
Feeders for fat balls for birds
As the nets have been removed from our fat balls, the best way to feed them is in a special feeder and we have a range of these which include those with a cage around the actual feeder. This arrangement allows small birds in through the cage to safely feed, but keeps larger birds such as Jackdaws out and also grey squirrels - which can be a real menace with fat balls for birds.
However, birds such as Robins and Blackbirds also like fat balls but aren't easily able to use the various types of feeder (though Robins will have a good go). So placing one or two fat balls on a bird table is a good way to ensure they're not left out.
