Live bird foods and Feeders
Live foods and feeders for garden birds are now an established part of the wild bird food supplies people are using. Live meal worms can be a hugely important wild bird food, especially in the fledgling season because natural food such as insects and caterpillars are often in short supply. Live bird food, such as mealworms and wax worms, should be fed from special live bird food feeders to ensure the live bird food can't wriggle away. A caged live food feeder will prevent larger birds getting to the live mealworms or wax worms, and allow species such as Robin and Blue Tit to gain the maximum benefit. Live meal worms and live wax worms are obviously different to other wild bird foods and need to be stored in a very cool place to ensure they stay in the right condition - a fridge or cold garage is ideal. An alternative to live mealworms are dried mealworms which still have much of the benefit of live mealworms, but they should be soaked in water before use.
