Sultanas

Succulent sultanas and raisins are a real favourite of ground feeding garden birds such as Blackbirds, Song Thrushes and Starlings. Sultanas are especially valuable in late winter and spring when natural fruits are difficult to find. In the breeding season they are a popular bird food and are best soaked in water so adult birds can feed them to their young. Sultanas and raisins are suitable for bird tables and ground feeders.

House Sparrow

The House Sparrow deserves its name as it often nests in buildings. These habits and the ability to exploit a wide variety of foods have resulted in the worldwide spread of the species. However the lack of holes in buildings for nesting and poor availability of insects on which they feed their young has resulted in a declining population in some areas of the UK.

Robin

These brightly coloured small birds commonly found in many gardens and are one of Britain's favourite birds. The robin will take the juicy insects and worms as quickly as they appear. They are territorial and very aggressive in nature and have a ferocious appetite. Their brightly coloured red breast is their most attractive feature and for this reason the robin is seen on Christmas cards.

Song Thrush

The Song Thrush as its name suggests has a beautiful flute-like song in which it repeats phrases (distinguishing it from the song of the blackbird). This song can be heard from as early as January and each individual can have a repertoire of around a hundred phrases.
