Wild bird seed
At Vine House Farm we not only supply high-quality wild bird seed, but we actually grow some of it ourselves! The wild bird seeds we grow are black sunflowers for our mixes, red and white millet, canary seed, oil seed rape and naked oats.
There are, of course, some wild bird seeds which we can’t grow ourselves because the climate in the UK just isn’t suitable, and these include niger seed and sunflower hearts. However, we do ensure these wild bird seeds are of the highest quality, and by supplying them direct from our farm and straight to you, we minimise the carbon miles involved.
Different types of seed for wild birds
Wild bird seed comes in many kinds, but as a start point it makes sense to split it between straight seeds - those that come on their own - and those that form mixes. Straight seeds include black sunflower, niger, red millet, white millet, wheat and oil seed rape. Our very own wild bird seed mixes at Vine House Farm include VHF Mixed Seed, VHF High Energy Mix and VHF Finch Mix.
The best way to feed wild bird seed is as follows:
- For all seeds and seed mixes with the exception of niger - a hanging tube feeder
- For niger a special hanging tube feeder which has tiny ports in it to stop the seed flowing out
- On a bird table or Ground Feeding Tray for species such as Blackbird and Robin, but preferably wild bird seed with no husk e.g. sunflower hearts
Along with other types of bird food, wild bird seed is an essential food to put out for your garden birds.
High-quality wild bird seed at low prices
Although the wild bird seed we supply from Vine House Farm is of the highest quality, our prices are surprisingly low.
We’re able to keep the prices of our wild bird seed low because we grow some of it ourselves here on the farm, but also because our overheads are less than many of our competitors, and not least because we do most of our own packing and everything we supply comes direct from our farm.
