Description

The Hogilo Hedgehog House is specifically designed for hedgehog hibernation and breeding. Made from FSC timber and recycled agricultural plastic, this is a great environmentally-friendly hedgehog house. It features a predator-proof entrance and has easy access via a removable lid for cleaning and inspection.

As part of a wildlife garden – or at least a garden which has an area dedicated to wildlife – installing a hedgehog house is one of the best ways to help the decline of this once common mammal.

Place the predator-proof hedgehog house in a sheltered and very shaded corner of your garden, ideally with a layer of branches, twigs and other garden materials over it for added insulation and protection.

To some extent this product is also a dog-proof hedgehog house, though clearly other measures should be taken to keep dogs away from it.

I’m very pleased. It’s well made and designed. I don’t know if the hedgehog’s using it during the day but it took only a day to find the dish of food I place inside each evening.

You'll need to put it on something like a small slab, and not directly onto the soil, but the same is true of any hedgehog house. This is a well-made house. Surprisingly, the hedgehogs started taking an interest after just a couple days. It's a bit warm for them at the moment, but once the weather cools off it should be snug inside.

Delivery prompt, excellent. Hogilo house brilliant. Our hog guest is in it now, as an alternative to sharing homes with our tortoise. Tortoises don't like sharing at all! If we can keep them separated both animals will be happy.

Generally quite satisfied with the concept and the design. However, the base could have incorporated a damp-proof membrane to eliminate water ingress from the soil. Very best regards

Hedgehogs have declined in the UK by around 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas. The reasons are numerous, but certainly include a lack of suitable hibernation and nesting sites. Therefore finding a space in your garden for a Hogilo Hedgehog House, is a step you can take to help this once common and endearing mammal recover in numbers.
Providing a hedgehog nest box in your garden should be one of several steps taken if you want to help hedgehogs in the area where you live. The other steps need to include providing special hedgehog food, plus ensuring the creatures have access to and from your garden. On the latter, one of the best ways to do this is to ask neighbours if you can cut a small opening at the base of boundary fences so the hedgehogs can pass through. This also helps reduce fatalities because the hedgehogs can go from one garden to the other without the need to go under gates and out onto roads. And finally, always ensure there’s a ground level dish of clean water for hedgehogs to drink.
For cleaning out a hedgehog box, this should be done after hibernation and before breeding starts. The window for this is generally just March and April, as any earlier risks disturbing the hedgehog's hibernation, and any later risks disturbing the nest - which can lead to the parents abandoning their hoglets.
