Alongside our garden birds, there are a number of other species at risk due to habitat changes and loss of nesting sites. The Kestrel is a hovering species, often seen on road edgeways looking for voles
This nest box is made to order, using slow-seasoned FSC certified timber, which negates the need for stains or preservatives. It should be situated around 5m from ground level, facing east or NE/SE with a clear flight path. If sited above rough grassland, where voles chose to live, the chance of occupancy is increased. A position close to light traffic is acceptable, if necessary
Handmade to order. Please allow up to six weeks for delivery.
What makes this nest box more suited to Kestrels than other birds?
The linear shape is designed to replicate the Kestrel’s favoured choice of nest site, as it prefers cliff or building ledges, old crows nests or to enter some sort of chamber (perhaps a hole in a large tree or opening in the roof of an old building) but not drop down to any great extent once inside – so the entrance to the nest box is almost at the same height as the chamber.
What time of year can I expect to find Kestrels or other birds nesting in this product?
The female kestrel will typically lay 3-6 eggs late April or early May, but this is very much weather and food dependant (insufficient food such as voles and mice means she won’t lay). As Kestrels don’t build their own nests, the time between selecting the nest box and laying can be relatively short.
Where’s the best place to position the Kestrel Nest Box?
It needs to be at least 5m high and positioned on a tree trunk on the edge of woodland or in a hedgerow, or on a pole set securely into the ground in either of the two previous locations, or alternatively on a barn or wall of another farm building, which is secluded and private (like most raptors, kestrels are shy of humans). Importantly, the nest box should face east, north east or south east. As the kestrel doesn’t bring nest materials to the box, adding a thin layer of wood chips is a good idea.
When's the best time to clean the Kestrel Box?
The best time to inspect the box and clean out if it has been used is between September to March. The box should not be disturbed between Spring-Summer due to potential breeding birds
Will other birds use the Kestrel Box?
Tawny, Little or Barn owls may use it, along with Stock Doves or Jackdaws
