This wooden Tawny Owl Nest Box has been designed to recreate a natural nesting site as they nest within large, deep cavities in old trees.
As they are territorial birds, only one pair will occupy a woodland territory and nest site. This box design will be readily taken up by nesting owls, particularly if they are looking for a new territory and nest site. In the right surroundings, this box may well be used every year.

The Tawny Owl Nest Box is made to order with FSC timber, which is slow-seasoned, negating the need for chemicals, stains or artificial preservatives. This nest box is an effective way of offering a nesting cavity to Tawny Owls, particularly in places where there are few natural hollows – such as in extensive gardens with healthy trees, secondary woodland and coniferous plantations. The box may be used every year and has an integral perch to provide a safe area for the fledglings when they first emerge, as well as a door below, to allow for cleaning and inspection.

What makes this nest more suited to Tawny owls than other birds?
The shape and size makes it ideal for Tawny owls, though other species including Jackdaw and Stock Dove may also use it.
What time of year can I expect to find Tawny Owls or other birds nesting in this product?
Tawny owls nest early in the season, and will normally have selected their nest site by early February. Eggs are laid late February or into March.
Where is the best place to position the Tawny Owl Nest Box?
The nest box needs to be positioned on a mature tree, 3.5-5m high, where there is a clear flight path to the entrance of the box. Never on an isolated post, as fledglings use higher branches around the nest box in woodland or a copse. The entrance should face either east, north east or south east.
When can I inspect the Tawny Owl Nest Box?
The box can be inspected in May, however care should be taken when opening the inspection hatch, as Tawny Owls can get aggressive if there is a threat to their young nearby.
What do Tawny Owls eat?
The availability of food close to the nesting box is vital, so position near fruit or nut-bearing trees and shrubs, where there is a variety of food for their chosen diet of of mice, voles, rats, insects, invertebrates, amphibians and birds.
