Adding one or more bat boxes to your garden is a great way to help these once-common mammals recover from population declines. This Chavenage bat box is made from untreated FSC certified timber, is easy to install, and provides both a breeding and roosting site for more common species of bat such as Pipistrelle and Noctule.

Ideally, a bat box should be positioned at least 4 metres from the ground. It can be secured to a tree or wall of a house, though it’s important that it doesn’t get full sun for all of the day – so a south-east or south-west aspect is best. It’s also best to position the bat box away from artificial lights.

Bats are great for gardens, as they can eat up to 3000 flying insects per night!

With a reduction in suitable nesting and roosting sites over many decades, most bat species in the UK have suffered population declines. Therefore providing bat boxes on a suitable tree or building wall is useful in helping to reverse this decline, plus bats are a great mammal to have in and around a garden, as they can consume up to 3000 flying insects such as midges in a single night.

The Chavenage bat box is very well made from untreated FSC certified timber. It should ideally be sited at least 4 metres from the ground, though if this height is difficult to achieve from a safety perspective, then at least 2.5m will probably suffice. Importantly, bat boxes shouldn’t be positioned where they’ll be in direct sunlight for most of the day – so avoid south facing aspects. SE or SW facing is preferable, and if a tree trunk is being used then 2 or even 3 bat boxes at the same height but facing different ways is likely to increase the chances of bats using them. This is because bats will have a preference for different aspects depending on the time of year.

The three main species of bat which are likely to use bat boxes in gardens are Pipistrelle, Noctule and Daubenton's. Note that all species of bat in the UK are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act, and therefore it is illegal to disturb or handle them.

It is advised the bat boxes should be placed on a tree trunk or wall and ideally at a height from the ground of 4 metres or more. - Position the bat box so that it gets some sunshine but isn't in direct sunlight all-day - so therefore a south-west or south-east direction is ideal.

The main way is to ensure that the bat box is sufficiently high on a tree trunk or wall, with four metres or above being best. The direction the bat box faces is also important, as bats don’t like to get too warm in the day - so don’t have the box facing south, but instead south-east or south-west. If a tree trunk is being used, then having more than one box will also help attract bats, as some species prefer to move to different aspects depending on the time of year, and this so the temperature inside the box is closer to optimum.

No, bat boxes do not need to be cleaned, as the design means that bat droppings will fall from the small opening below where the mammals hang inside.

It’s impossible to say, but providing the bat box is located at the right height and facing the right direction - and of course there are bats already in the area you live - then it could be only a matter of weeks.
