Although it’s unlikely to be anyone’s favourite job, the fact is that the regular cleaning of bird feeders is a totally essential element of garden bird feeding. The same also applies to other surface areas garden birds come into contact with when feeding and drinking, such as bird tables and bird baths. This is because a high concentration of birds in a relatively small area and combined with waste from feeding such as seed husks, can produce the conditions for deadly bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli. to develop and spread. In addition, the concentration of birds can also allow the transmission of diseases from one bird to another - e.g. when a bird uses a perch to feed from immediately after another bird.
