The Starling Nest Box has a hinged roof to allow for easy inspection and cleaning, drainage holes to prevent dampness, and is finished-off in a light oak preservative with felt roof to protect from weather damage.
Starling numbers have declined considerably in the last 30 years, with a loss of natural nesting sites being a contributing factor to this decline. Our Starling Nest Box has a 45mm entrance hole and ample room inside, making it ideal for the species. The height of the nest box is 50CM, the width 20CM and the depth 23CM.
Starlings like to nest in small loose colonies, so if you have the space and can afford more than one nest box, then please consider putting up a few to help the species recover in numbers.

With Starling numbers having declined dramatically over the last 30 years or so and with one of the reasons being the loss of suitable nest sites, then providing nest boxes for the species is a great way to do your bit in helping numbers recover.
Our Starling Nest Box has been specifically designed for this once abundant species, with a 45mm entrance whole and generous amount of space in the box for the young Starlings to grow.
This Starling bird box has a hinged roof to allow for easy cleaning and inspection, with small drainage holes in the base of the box. Finished in a light oak preservative and with a waterproof felt roof, the next box provides a safe and secure environment for breeding Starlings.
As with all nest boxes for birds, a Starling house should be positioned where it isn’t in direct midday sunlight, as this can mean the inside of the box becomes too hot which can lead to the death of the young inside. So choose an east or north facing aspect, and at a height of at least 3 metres from the ground. This can be on a tree or house wall etc.
Starlings like to nest in loose colonies, so if funds allow and you have sufficient space, then please consider putting up multiple nest boxes which are a metre or so apart.
Where do you put a starling nest box?
A Starling nest box needs to be about 3 metres up from the ground, and fixed to a tree or wall and out of direct sunlight - so ideally pointing east or north.
What makes this nest box more suited to Starlings than other birds?
The relatively large opening hole of 45mm is ideal for Starlings, with smaller birds such as Blue tits favouring holes which are much smaller. The size of the nest box is also larger than that used for species of tit.
Where is the best place to position the Starling Nest Box?
On a wall or tree about 3 metres up, but never in a south facing aspect where it will get full sun, as the heat will almost certainly kill the chicks. Facing west also isn’t advised as driving rain is likely to enter the entrance hole, so go for an east or north facing direction.
What time of year can I expect to find Starlings nesting in this product?
Nest building usually starts during March, with the female Starling on eggs by mid-April.
