Swallows, martins, and warblers may begin moving south earlier than usual if local insect stocks drop too low to support them. For some, altered stopover routes may be the best option. Thankfully, making your garden more wildlife-friendly doesn’t require complex landscaping. Often, simple additions make a significant difference.

With dehydration posing an immediate threat to birds during high temperatures, provide shallow dishes or birdbaths with sloped edges (no deeper than 1–2 inches), so smaller birds can drink and bathe safely. Place water sources in shaded areas to keep the water cool and slow down evaporation. Refresh the water daily and scrub dishes regularly to stop bacteria from multiplying in the warm weather. It would also be worthwhile placing a few flat stones or twigs inside the water dish so insects and small birds have safe footholds.

During a heatwave, offer foods that deliver high calories with minimal foraging effort; this includes live mealworms. They are an indispensable source of protein and moisture for insect-eaters like robins and wrens when the ground is too hard to dig. High-fat foods like suet that help migratory birds pack on necessary weight quickly. Remember to store suet in cool places and try to feed in shaded spots so it doesn’t melt or spoil in the sun.

A manicured lawn offers little relief from scorching heat, so try to create cool micro-habitats by leaving untidy corners in your garden and consider creating piles of wood, damp leaves, and compost to retain moisture, providing cool damp areas where beetles and woodlice can survive. Native hedges can also provide birds a place to rest out of the sun and hide from predators while conserving precious body moisture.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

As our weather patterns become more volatile, wild species face unprecedented pressures. However, individual actions add up quickly. By leaving seed heads intact, delaying winter cutbacks, putting out clean water daily, and offering high-calorie foods, garden owners can create a network of safe havens across many areas. These small choices give both resident garden favourites and passing migratory travellers the fuel they need to survive the increasingly extreme summer weather.
