Our mealworm food is a specially-made bran that provides all the nutrients necessary to feed mealworms. It is also beneficial to those who are breeding live mealworms for birds.

Mealworms can be fed on a variety of things, including fruit, oats and cereal. However, using a specially-made mealworm food like fortified bran takes the stress out of feeding your live mealworms. You can simply fill your container of mealworms with the bran (about 2-3 inches is optimum) which will allow them to slowly feed on it.

FAQ Title 1

What are the benefits of buying food for mealworms?

FAQ Content 1

There are several benefits of buying mealworm food. Providing the right nutrients to live mealworm diets means they stay healthier and live for longer. If you want to keep mealworms for a long period -- for example if you are buying them in bulk for your garden -- properly feeding them helps you do this.

Mealworms with the correct diet and kept in the right conditions can live for up for 2 weeks in storage. This saves you money and time in the long-run, giving you a live bird food supply that lasts for longer.

Another key benefit of using mealworm food is that it ensures your birds consume the proper nutrients too. Wild birds need protein and fat, which livefoods such as mealworm larva can provide them with. When mealworms are properly fed, garden birds that feed on them are more likely to absorb more nutrients from the larvae

Ensuring birds have access to high protein food sources is essential during breeding and fledgling seasons especially, when birds feed mealworms to their young. Birds in the nest need more protein than at other times in their life because they are growing feathers. Because of this, properly feeding mealworms is highly important to supporting birds' needs. Birds that eat mealworms that have been properly fed will be more likely to survive.

FAQ Title 2

Do mealworms need food?

FAQ Content 2

When mealworms go dormant, they are kept in their larval stage. This allows you to keep them for longer periods without them developing into a darkling beetle (often called mealworm beetles). During this time, they are kept in cool conditions which stop their growth hormones from developing. When they go into a dormant state, mealworms do not need to be fed. Because of this, it's important they are given plenty of food before they are stored.

Mealworms ideally need food before they are placed in bird feeders. This ensures they are a nutrient-rich food source for birds that feed on them. Once taken out of storage, allow mealworms to reach room temperature, place in a shallow dish or tub and feed with around 2 inches of mealworm food.

Once ready, take your mealworms out and place them in the proper feeder so birds are able to access them.

FAQ Title 3

What is the difference between live and dried mealworms?

FAQ Content 3

Dried mealworms are dead, and have been dried out while in their larval state. This means you do not need to feed them when storing as you would with live worms.

However, it is advised that you soak dried mealworms before you put them in your garden. You can do this by placing them in water for at least 30 minutes. This makes them a more plentiful water-source for birds.
