No mess bird food is a type of bird seed mix that birds completely consume, without leaving any waste. This is also referred to as a ‘won’t grow bird seed mix’.

This is an ideal option for people who wish to reduce sprouting seeds in their garden, or generally reduce waste and mess.

Birds are naturally messy eaters. As they consume certain foods, including whole seeds, they discard seeds and the husks (outer shells) of seeds. These then drop onto the ground, or get stuck underneath feeders. If left, wasted seeds can either sprout in the ground or cause rot and fungi. If the husks of seeds are left to rot for too long below or in a feeder this can breed Salmonella. This disease is harmful to birds, which pass it between one another.

No mess bird food is made using de-husked seeds, called sunflower heart chips, and granulated seeds. This makes it easier for birds to eat and less likely to be wasted.

This mix is also part of our wheat free bird seeds collection. Bird foods that contain wheat can cause significant sprouting when wasted seeds fall into the earth, which can be particularly tricky to manage if your bird feeder hangs over/is near decking or a slatted balcony.

Vine House Farm's no grow seed mix is also made using a selection of seeds that are most appealing to different species of bird. This encourages more birds that visit your garden to feed on the mix which, again, means less is wasted.

FAQ Title 1

What are the benefits of no waste foods?

FAQ Content 1

Other than creating less sprouting plants or other forms of mess, other benefits of no mess bird seeds include that they attract a wider variety of birds. Our seed mixes, including this no grow mix, are carefully selected with different species in mind.

Some birds, like robins and blackbirds, are unable to consume whole seeds, like black sunflower seeds. This means they tend to avoid mixes that only include them. This is because they are soft-bill birds; their beaks have not evolved to be able to break down whole seeds and remove the husks by themselves. Our high energy, no mess wild bird seed blends contain seeds which have had these husks removed -- called sunflower hearts. These hearts have then been broken up into smaller chips, making them consumable for more species of bird.

The variety of food sources in our high energy blend also means that more bird species will be attracted to it. For instance, certain species of finch, tree sparrows, dunnocks and collared doves may  favour millet specifically over other seeds.

As well as this, another benefit of won’t grow mixes is that they help reduce the risk of bird disease. Sometimes, discarded seeds can grow bacteria if left under or near bird feeders. If consumed by birds, this can cause issues. This no mess bird seed is an ideal option for helping to reduce this risk, as seed husks and whole seeds will not be discarded and left to rot when wild birds eat it.

FAQ Title 2

What is in our no grow seed mix?

FAQ Content 2

As well as reducing waste, our no grow seed mix provides much-needed energy for birds. This makes it an ideal type of bird food during Winter months, when birds need more energy to keep warm. The finer pieces also mean that our no-grow mixture is suitable for baby birds, so is a good choice to add into gardens during fledgling season.

Our high energy bird seed mix contains  sunflower hearts, peanut granules (often called 'kibbled peanuts') white millet, kibbled maize, pinhead oats, canary seed, oil seed rape and red millet. High energy sunflower hearts and chopped peanuts make up the bulk of this year-round favourite.

FAQ Title 3

How can I reduce bird seed mess?

FAQ Content 3

As well as purchasing a no mess bird seed such as this one, there are several other things you can do to try to reduce bird seed mess and sprouting seeds. These include:

  • Using bird feeder trays under feeders to catch any flyaway pieces of bird food. Even though birds are less likely to discard seeds when they eat premium blends, seeds and grains can still fall from feeders. This is particularly common when larger birds feed on the mix, as their weight can shake feeders. Birds also kick off seeds on bird tables as they feed and compete with one another for bird food.
  • Preventing seeds from getting wet. Hulled seeds and sunflower heart chips can spoil quickly if they get wet. On rainy days, place this mix in a feeder that has a cover or in a naturally covered area.
  • Avoid feeding whole seeds near decking and patios. If seeds fall and sprout in these areas, it will be harder to remove them from your garden area. Opt for a no waste bird seed mix like this one, or use sunflower heart chips in these areas instead.
  • Store no mess blends properly. Make sure you prevent pests from getting near your no mess seed mixes by storing in a sealed container, in a cool place like a garage or shed.

Excellent seed and nut mix which disappears daily without a scrap left. As I’m changing over from a whole seed mix, I’ve noticed there is less sprouting of seeds in the gravel below the bird table so once the previous mix has been used, I’m anticipating seedling free gravel! The pigeons regularly fight over the table and their wing flapping scatters the seed mix all over the garden so this non sprouting mix is going to be a boon! I have tried some of the other mixes on the Vine’s website with varying degrees of success, the no mess mix left a huge mess as the birds disliked the small seeds (don’t know what they are but there were red, white and a some black seeds) even the pigeons and squirrels didn’t mop these up. So this particular mix, I was happy to see, didn’t contain those and so far I haven’t got the mess accumulating under the bird feeders. Fingers crossed that this continues.

The birds love it! It was a re-order as they ate the previous lot rather keenly. It's a lot less messy too than some seeds we've tried. Delivery was swift, faster than promised in fact.

Always a good product with the only problem that it can get sticky when wet. Certainly no weed growth underneath the feeders and no unsightly black sunflower husks either.

Won't Grow Mix has been very well received by the sparrows in my garden and their young... and the wood pigeons more than like the droppings from the bird feeder!!

'My' birds have enjoyed this fir many years. They eat it at quite a rate so assume it's enjoyed. I have a single squirrel which feasts upside down too.

Does what it says on the packet. No sprouting grasses and tiny plants under feeders. However, one of the seeds in the mix produces a really strange fungus - at least, I think it's a fungus. Dark, very fine hairs that turn to slime when touched. Would love to know what it is. Thanks.

FAQS

What are the benefits of no waste foods?

What is in our no grow seed mix?

How can I reduce bird seed mess?
