Rolled naked oats are a good addition to a range of other foods for garden birds, and will be eaten by ground feeding species such as Blackbirds and Robins. Similar to porridge oats which use the same grain, with the difference between the two being that rolled naked oats are steamed and flattened only, whereas porridge oats are also ground into granules.
When feeding rolled naked oats to garden birds, it’s important to also provide clean water for the birds to drink. Rolled oats should be fed from a bird table or ground feeder tray. Never cook the oats before putting them out for birds.

I know black birds love them but not getting any in my new garden. The Woodpigeon gets the benefit. Will continue to buy as I know blackbirds will eventually return to this new estate.

Use it to mix with other seeds, though not appealing to all small birds, I believe one bird being goldfinch, ground feeding birds clean up rejected seed, may best be fed on seed trays or on ground.

They look very nice. If I were a bird I'd gobble them up but the birds round here seem to eat them with a long spoon.

It took a few days for the birds to take to these. Now they have taken to them well.
Rolled naked oats are a nutritious food for a number of garden bird species, and in particular those that typically feed on the ground such as Blackbird, Robin and Starling. These oats are similar to porridge oats and use the same original grain, with the difference being how they’re processed.
For rolled naked oats, these are simply steamed and flattened and therefore are classified as wholegrain – with the steaming process meaning that the oats don’t crack when they’re rolled and flattened. The process is then completed by drying the oats. For porridge oats, the process starts the same but the oats are also crushed into small pieces, and are therefore no longer classified as wholegrain.
Rolled naked oats are not suitable for hanging tube feeders, as the food will not flow easily down the tube. In addition, some species which eat naked oats can’t use hanging tube feeders – the Blackbird being the best example. Therefore use a bird table or ground tray to feed the rolled naked oats from, plus always supply fresh drinking water close by. Rolled naked oats should never be cooked before putting them out for birds, as this could result in the food congealing and drying out around the bird’s beak.
Can wild birds eat porridge oats?
Birds can eat porridge oats provided they aren’t cooked, as doing so can be dangerous as it may lead to the food caking-up and drying around the beak of a bird.
Are porridge oats good for wild birds?
Porridge oats are good for birds, but it’s arguably better to feed them rolled naked oats - which will also cost less.
How do I feed porridge oats to birds in my garden?
For porridge oats or naked rolled oats, feed these to garden birds by placing them on a bird table or ground feeding tray. Never cook the oats first, and be sure to always provide clean drinking water close by.
Can squirrels eat porridge oats?
Yes, both grey and red squirrels can eat uncooked porridge oats and rolled naked oats.
Can you feed porridge oats to ducks?
Yes you can, and ducks will readily eat both uncooked porridge oats and rolled naked oats.
