Description

The Canary Seed we sell is grown here at Vine House Farm. This small grass seed is rich in oil and protein and therefore we also use it in many of our bird seed mixes. It is suitable for hanging seed bird feeders, bird tables and ground feeders. It is one of the favourite foods of House sparrows that feed regularly at Vine House Farm, but also enjoyed by Siskins and other species of finch, plus buntings such as Yellow hammers.

The seeds arrived in a large sack as I brought a lot. No damage to the sack, and no sign of any contaminants on the seeds. As I've just done the big garden bird watch, I've seen first hand, them being eaten by Blue Tits and Great Tits. So if the birds love them, then they do the trick, thankfully, as I sure didn't want to eat them myself. 5 stars, no complains.

Very good quality and good value for money. I have a major problem with the birds wasting most of food which falls of the bird feeders and onto the floor.

Well the birds eat it in quantity, so it must be good. Ordered and delivered in a matter of a few days.

Canary seed is now commercially grown in a number of countries across the world and largely for bird food, though the wild plant it comes from is native to the Mediterranean region. Its scientific name is Phalaris canariensis, and it belongs to the botanic family of Poaceae. Canary seed is good for birds because it’s very high in protein compared to other cereal grains. Indeed, canary seed contains 20% protein, with its remaining nutritional value being 8% crude fat, 61% starch and 7% fibre.
At Vine House Farm we’ve long grown canary seed, and therefore have complete control of the product we sell to our customers. We also see the value of feeding canary seed to once common birds to help their numbers recover, with a good example being the increase in House sparrows we’ve seen as a result of the canary seed we put out for them around our yards and farm buildings.
