Description

The Ground Bird Feeder Cage Guard is designed to prevent larger species of bird from getting to the food, plus also helps protect small birds from predators when they are feeding.

The top of the bird feeder cage guard opens easily for refilling either a ground tray or seed hopper, or food can be placed straight on the ground. This ground bird feeder cage guard is available in two mesh sizes: the large mesh excludes all large birds such as Wood pigeons, Jackdaws and Magpies, with the small mesh version also keeping out Starlings and also Grey squirrels. Both the mesh ground bird feeders are 56cm wide x 37cm tall.

It's very sturdy, which is why it isn't a cheap thing, and it doesn't really need to be pegged down as it's quite heavy. It deters pigeons, but unfortunately starlings can get in. It was intended to protect food for the robins in the garden. Usually, the starlings do leave some food for them, but it was a slight disappointment that they could get through the mesh. But it is the best thing I've tried or seen so far for deterring them, and Vine House always deliver very promptly.

I'm very happy with this ground guard as it has dissuaded the local feral pigeons from invading my garden. It's used by blackbirds, starlings, robins and sparrows. I highly recommend it.

Once assembled it was quite sturdy. But the trap door with hinge was pretty useless to be honest. I found it very difficult to attach and then it detached easily when moved and seemed to fall off whenever I tried to open it. As I haven't got it pegged down I can just lift the whole cage to add feed. But it would be inco, and if you did have it pegged down.

This appears to be robust and despite its size is not visually intrusive given its green colour. Blackbirds can hop through easily enough, as alas are squirrels, hopefully they will get so fat on the amount of expensive feed they eat that eventually they won't be able to squeeze through. Rapid delivery as usuaul from Vine House Farm.

Well built and easy to assemble. It keeps out wood pigeons and pheasants although they reach through to get at seed near the edge of the guard. It does not deter squirrels which slip in and out without difficulty. most small birds seem to accept it without any problem, although chaffinches seem reluctant to enter.

This is great if you want to keep some food back for the smaller ground-feeding birds. It is very sturdy and quite heavy so other creatures can't knock it aside. I did find the other day that "someone" had managed to open the lid and knock it off its clips - unfortunately that was the night I didn't have the outdoor camera in the garden. I suspect it was a cat but I have now wired down the handle so it can't be opened. You can easily refill the feed tray without opening the lid by lifting the whole thing. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it.

Keeps the pigeons away from the smaller birds’ food. Has made the smaller garden birds more visible, as previously food was scattered under the hedge, but this in turn attracted rats. Sturdy and reliable

I bought this to keep five pesky jays off the food so the little birds get some. Unfortunately, one jay seems to have been to WeightWatchers and can get in and scoff the lot. I've ordered the smaller Ground Guard so hopefully even Slimmer of the Year won't be able to get in.

Sturdy little guard for a ground feeder. The birds like it! The fastenings are not very robust, but we have added a twist of rubber covered wire at each corner, which is holding the pieces together more firmly. Otherwise we are pleased with it, & it looks better than our tatty old wire guard.

Bought the guard with the larger openings. Works very well, blackbirds are able to get in and out comfortably and love the live mealworms we bought at the same time. The cage excludes the pesky pigeons and most of the magpies although the young magpies are able to get in. Fortunately we do not suffer from squirrels so cannot comment on how effective the cage would be against them.

Cage itself is very good and super easy to assemble. My only issue is that it does not stop magpies getting in and I did not realise this before purchasing. Description of the product clearly states is prevents pigeons (which it does) and I incorrectly assumed it would also prevent magpies.

A good product, well made and it should last a long time. It keeps the pigeons out whilst letting the smaller ground feeders hop in and out. Unfortunately the squirrels can easily get through as well so it hasn’t solved that problem.

We bought this to keep pigeons away from the ground seed mix....and it works perfectly! Easily assembled, though I thought the holes would be too small for blackbirds, but I was wrong. Within 10mins the blackbirds, sparrows, starlings, finches etc were hopping in and out whilst the Wood and feral pigeons looked on trying to reach the food.

I bought this to stop the pigeons grabbing all the ground feed intended for blackbirds, robins, dunnocks et cetera. Food is indeed periodically taken from the ground feeder I placed inside. The clip that secures the hinged lid looks like it will break shortly – doesn’t seem intended for daily use. Strangest thing – some creature regularly goes inside the ground guard and piles up twigs and bark on top of the seed. What’s that all about?!

Very good for ground feeding birds up to the size of blackbirds, without food being taken by birds such as pigeons or pheasants. Food should always be placed in a small ground tray with the tray taken in overnight so as not to attract rats. Also, even though the guard comes with metal hooks to secure it to the ground, if food is left in overnight, badgers will break the guard apart to get the food. The food can be kept dry all day, if a sheet of timber, held down by a brick, is placed on the top of the guard, but this is not provided. I used a guard for many years, but when I moved house, I left it for the new residents to continue using it, so have just purchased another for my new garden.

    Just the job

I have just received the large mesh ground guard and the blackbirds are delighted. As far as I am concerned it has already paid for itself as it is keeping the pigeons and Jackdaws out.

Providing food on the ground is an important part of garden bird feeding, as some species of bird cannot use hanging feeders - or at least not easily. However, a ready supply of food such as sunflower hearts or suet pellets fed from a ground tray or direct on the ground, will often attract larger species of bird such as Jackdaw, Wood pigeon and Rook. This can mean that food intended for ground feeding species of songbird such as Robin, can quickly be taken - plus the presence of the larger species will often deter small birds from feeding.
The solution to this problem is a bird feeder cage guard, with the basic principle being that small birds like Robins can access food placed within the cage, whereas larger species such as Jackdaw can’t.
An important consideration if using the small mesh bird feeder cage ground guard, is that it will prevent species of thrush and Blackbirds from getting any food. Given that Song thrushes and Blackbirds are essentially ground feeding species, this could mean they miss out on the benefits of your efforts to provide food for your garden birds. Therefore it’s best practice to also have at least some food available on a bird table to ground feeder, which isn’t covered.
