I bought this to sprinkle round plants as a slug & snail deterrent. It won't harm anything. It's very reasonably priced for a good sized bag.

During the breeding season, female wild birds in gardens need a source of calcium to ensure the correct development of their eggs. Oyster grit for birds is ideal for them, with the substance being digestible and therefore allowing the calcium the shell grit contains to be absorbed by the bird, which in turn aids the formation of strong egg shells.
Very small quantities of oyster shell grit for birds also helps their digestive system for foods such as seed, and therefore it’s a good idea to provide grit throughout the year in your garden.
What is oyster grit used for?
There are two main uses for oyster shell grit for wild garden birds: The first is to help female birds during the breeding season to produce healthy eggs, with this aided by the calcium the grit contains. The second reason is that birds use grit to aid the digestion of foods such as seeds, and do so throughout the year.
Is shell grit good for birds?
Generally, yes, shell grit is good for garden birds, because in the breeding season it helps females develop and lay healthy eggs, then throughout the year help birds digest their food.
Should you provide grit for wild birds?
Providing grit for wild birds coming to gardens isn’t essential, but it is generally beneficial to them - and in particular during the breeding season.
Can a bird eat too much grit?
For wild birds visiting gardens it’s unlikely they’d eat too much grit, though for caged birds such as parrots and species of exotic finch, too much grit can be very harmful to them.
