Which seeds attract which birds?

One benefit of adding mixed bird seed to your bird feed selection is that you will be able to attract a variety of wild birds to your garden with it. For example, small seeds, such as millet, attract Tree sparrows, House sparrows, dunnocks, and collared doves, and Chaffinches. Flaked maize is more likely to attract blackbirds. Equally, soft-bill species such as robins, and blackbirds cannot eat whole seeds that still have their original husk. If you are hoping to feed these species, then it’s best to use sunflower hearts or seed mixes that contain them. Q: How should I feed mixed wild bird seed to birds?

This bird seed mix is suitable for seed feeders, bird tables, ground feeders. To feed our bird food mixes, simply scatter the seeds on a bird table or ground feeder, or place inside your seed feeder. This will allow birds to easily access the seeds. During rainy seasons, seeds that get excessively wet can sometimes clump together. This is no issue for birds, which will happily eat them, but it can cause blockages in feeders. To avoid this, use a covered bird feeder. Our mixed bird seed blend can be fed to birds all year round. To provide more energy to birds during Winter months, you could also opt for one of our high energy seed mixes. These contain the same selection of bird foods, but with a higher ratio of black sunflower hearts and chopped peanuts. These are great sources of fat for birds, which is helpful during colder months and they are also edible for softbill species such as robins and blackbirds. If you are looking for other foods to put out for birds in the Winter, suet products -- such as fat balls, suet blocks and suet pellets -- are also a popular choice.

Our Mixed Seed is a carefully balanced budget mixed bird seed designed to attract a fairly wide variety of garden species. Composed of black sunflower seeds, wheat, kibbled maize, red and white millet, canary seed, rolled naked oats, pinhead oats and oil seed rape, 95% of which is grown right here on Vine House Farm, this mixed bird food offers great value and performance.

Ideal for use in seed feeders, it’s an excellent all-year bird food mix, delivering vital nutrition and energy.
