Can you give coconut to birds?

Coconut is safe for birds to consume, making coconut shells an ideal food container. However, our coconut shell bird feeders contain no fresh coconut and use only the waste shell. Birds that feed from our coconut halves will not be interested in the shell, so they can be safely disposed of once the suet and seed mix has been eaten.

How to feed coconut halves to birds

Our coconut bird feeders come with a string attached, meaning you can feed birds in your garden without needing to use a bird feeder. Simply hang it from the branch of a tree to attract many species of garden birds. If you wish, you can also hang the coconut shells on a bird feeding station, or place them on bird tables to attract wild birds to your garden.

Where do you hang a coconut for birds?

Hang your coconut halves on tree branches or from a bird feeder station to give birds a place to perch before and after they eat. Coconut shells should be hung from trees or bird feeders out of sunlight during hot months, to avoid the fat mixture inside perishing. Make sure the shells are hung high enough to avoid predators, as cats and dogs may be a danger to the birds you want to attract to your garden. Ideally, coconut halves for birds can be hung on tree branches and on the branches of bushes. Here, they can be easily accessed by a range of birds, including birds of different sizes. Suet is an attractive food product for most birds so if you are interested in attracting specific birds, such as Blue tits and Great tits, consider surrounding your coconut shells with a guardian to discourage larger birds from eating the entire contents.

Some orders less than 1kg in weight will come by Royal Mail.

Orders for Live Mealworms are sent directly from our supplier via Royal Mail. They are dispatched the same day if orders are received by 12pm Mon-Thurs; no orders are dispatched on a Friday. Please allow four working days for orders to arrive.

Our suet-filled Coconut Halves (coco-not halves) are produced in the UK using imported coconut crop waste, making the shell 100% compostable. Each half is naturally shaped to retain the suet while allowing easy pecking access, plus ensuring minimal waste.

An advantage of using our Coconut Halves over some other suet bird food products, is how easy it is for birds to cling to the edge of the shell and peck at the suet inside. And as the suet inside the shell gets eaten, species like Robin can easily stand inside and peck away at the remaining high-fat and energy-rich contents.
