Coconut halves were one of the first products of their kind to enter the market, well ahead of fat balls, blocks and pellets. Our coconut shells for birds are filled with calorie-rich suet and a combination of bird seeds that will attract a good number of different wild bird species

Coconut halves will feed birds throughout the year. The high energy suet provides much-needed calories to keep the birds in your garden energised through cold Winter months, and can also be a helpful support in their search for food during the summer months.

Coconut shell bird feeders are fully biodegradable, meaning that once the birds have finished eating you can be confident that the coconut halves left behind can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

Every time you purchase coconut bird feeders from Vinehouse Farm, you are helping to support the Wildlife Trusts. Thanks to our customers, we have donated over £1.9 million to local Trusts so far.

FAQ Title 1

Can you give coconut to birds?

FAQ Content 1

Coconut is safe for birds to consume, making coconut shells an ideal food container. However, our coconut shell bird feeders contain no fresh coconut and use only the waste shell. Birds that feed from our coconut halves will not be interested in the shell, so they can be safely disposed of once the suet and seed mix has been eaten.

FAQ Title 2

How to feed coconut halves to birds

FAQ Content 2

Our coconut bird feeders come with a string attached, meaning you can feed birds in your garden without needing to use a bird feeder. Simply hang it from the branch of a tree to attract many species of garden birds. If you wish, you can also hang the coconut shells on a bird feeding station, or place them on bird tables to attract wild birds to your garden.

FAQ Title 3

Where do you hang a coconut for birds?

FAQ Content 3

Hang your coconut halves on tree branches or from a bird feeder station to give birds a place to perch before and after they eat.

Coconut shells should be hung from trees or bird feeders out of sunlight during hot months, to avoid the fat mixture inside perishing. Make sure the shells are hung high enough to avoid predators, as cats and dogs may be a danger to the birds you want to attract to your garden.

Ideally, coconut halves for birds can be hung on tree branches and on the branches of bushes. Here, they can be easily accessed by a range of birds, including birds of different sizes.

Suet is an attractive food product for most birds so if you are interested in attracting specific birds, such as Blue tits and Great tits, consider surrounding your coconut shells with a guardian to discourage larger birds from eating the entire contents.

FAQ Title 4

What other foods should I put out with suet coconut feeders?

FAQ Content 4

To attract a variety of wild birds to your garden, it is important to put out a variety of bird food sources

Examples of popular foods include:

  • Sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts and sunflower heart chips
  • Whole straight seeds and seed mixes
  • Peanuts
  • Live mealworms and waxworms
  • Other suet products such as suet balls, suet pellets and suet blocks
FAQ Title 5

Which birds eat coconut halves?

FAQ Content 5

A variety of species enjoy eating fat-rich suet throughout the year so there is a chance you could attract a number of your local bird species by hanging coconut bird feeders in your garden.

Suet is a favourite of several species of tit, as well as Great spotted woodpeckers. As well as this, several other species of garden bird have been known to eat suet, including ground feeding birds like Robins and Blackbirds

Some species that commonly enjoy suet-filled coconut shells include:

This product is very good and attracts most common birds like the tits, blackbirds and sparrows. I mount one of the halves onto a miniature gantry at ground level and watch the birds as they peck at the 'swinging' seeds inside - strangely, I am glad to say, the pigeons show no interest. Give them a try - you'll find it worth it.

Regarding the packaging, there is no need to individually wrap each half in plastic. It's an unnecessary waste and a burden on the environment. They could be packaged by pressing two halves together and placing them in a box. The coconut shell is natural protection. However, packaging aside, they are a favourite with the birds !

FAQS

Can you give coconut to birds?

Coconut is safe for birds to consume, making coconut shells an ideal food container. However, our coconut shell bird feeders contain no fresh coconut and use only the waste shell. Birds that feed from our coconut halves will not be interested in the shell, so they can be safely disposed of once the suet and seed mix has been eaten.

How to feed coconut halves to birds

Our coconut bird feeders come with a string attached, meaning you can feed birds in your garden without needing to use a bird feeder. Simply hang it from the branch of a tree to attract many species of garden birds. If you wish, you can also hang the coconut shells on a bird feeding station, or place them on bird tables to attract wild birds to your garden.

Where do you hang a coconut for birds?

What other foods should I put out with suet coconut feeders?

To attract a variety of wild birds to your garden, it is important to put out a variety of bird food sources

Examples of popular foods include:

  • Sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts and sunflower heart chips
  • Whole straight seeds and seed mixes
