Oil seed rape, also known just as rapeseed, is eaten by most species of finch and bunting. It can be fed from a hanging seed feeder or scattered on a ground tray or bird table, and either as a straight feed or mixed with other seed types.
Oil seed rape bird food, as the name suggests, is high in natural oils and therefore good for birds which will convert this fat content into energy.
The rapeseed seeds we sell are grown by us right here on our conservation award winning farm.

Excellent product, excellent company and received within two days of ordering and I live in the far north of Scotland and p& p free.
We’ve long grown oil seed rape on our farm in the Lincolnshire Fens, so what we sell we also have complete quality control over from start to finish. Along with rapeseed being an important crop for us to sell, it also provides an important breeding habitat for a number of species of songbird which we’re trying to help on our farm - and notably Reed buntings.
Rapeseed for garden birds will be eaten by a number of species, including Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, House sparrow, Reed bunting and Yellowhammer. For some of these species and notably Yellowhammer, it’s best to feed the oil seed rape from the ground, a ground feeder tray or bird table.
Given its high oil content, rapeseed is beneficial to finches, sparrows and buntings, plus is relatively easy for them to eat. It can be fed as a straight seed or mixed with other seeds such as black sunflower.
Do birds eat oil seed rape?
Yes, some birds do eat oil seed rape, with species of bunting, finch and sparrow all doing so.
